Protect Yourself from Scams

Common Scam Warning Signs
  • Upfront Fees:

Legitimate VA benefits and federal programs are FREE. Never pay anyone to help you apply for benefits you've earned.

  • Pressure Tactics:

Scammers create urgency with phrases like "act now" or "limited time offer." Real benefits don't have artificial deadlines.

  • Guaranteed Approval:

No one can guarantee benefit approval. Anyone promising guaranteed results is lying.

  • Unsolicited Contact:

The VA will never call, email, or text you asking for personal information or payment. Be suspicious of unexpected contact.

  • Fake Websites:

Always verify you're on official .gov or .mil websites. Scammers create fake sites that look official.

How to Verify Legitimacy
  • Only use official .gov websites (VA.gov, SBA.gov, etc.)
  • Contact your local VA office directly to verify any claims
  • Work only with accredited VSO representatives
  • Check the BBB and online reviews before trusting any service
  • Never share your Social Security number or bank info over phone/email
Report Suspected Fraud
  • VA Inspector General:

    1-800-488-8244

  • FTC Fraud Reporting:

    1-877-382-4357 or ReportFraud.ftc.gov

  • VA OIG Hotline:

    vaoighotline@va.gov

  • FBI Internet Crime:

    ic3.gov

Remember: Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) like the American Legion, VFW, and DAV provide FREE, accredited assistance with benefit applications. You never need to pay for help accessing benefits you've earned through your service.
